Lush Life – A Satirical Cabaret in the Private Eye Dining Room

April 19th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Starring Dusty Limits and Tricity Vogue, with Special Guests
Upstairs at the Coach & Horses, Greek Street, Soho
Wednesdays 20th April, 27th April, 4th May, 25th May

*Time Out London Critics’ Choice

“Two of our favourite performers, decadent Dusty Limits and luminous Tricity Vogue, take up residence in the Private Eye Dining Room above the Coach and Horses for a new run of collaborative larks – and given the duo’s individual talents for well-turned numbers, sly humour and the occasional moment of vulnerability, we’re excited at the prospect.”
Ben Walters, Time Out London Cabaret Editor

“It’s the perfect marriage – what better location for a satirical cabaret show than the Private Eye dining room. Dusty Limits – the “love child of David Bowie and Tom Lehrer” – and Tricity Vogue, an elegant and hilarious songstress, host a refreshing antidote to brainless celebrity guff on TV.”
West End Extra

Biting satirical wit and intimate seductive warmth combine, as London cabaret partners-in-crime Dusty Limits and Tricity Vogue return to the scene of their triumphant 2010 run to bring you a brand new Lush Life.

Laying down the gauntlet for themselves to write a fresh show each week, bristling with topical material and iconoclastic inventiveness, the quick-witted duo prepare to turn on the charm full-beam. They may ruffle a few feathers, but it’ll feel delicious.

Dusty and Tricity will be joined by a different special guest at every show, plucked from their cabaret coterie, to join them in their antics.

Dinner from 7pm
Show 8.30pm-10.30pm
Three Course Dinner + Show £39.95

(Includes a glass of excellent Spanish Cava, starter, main, dessert, coffee or tea. Optional service charge will be added to all bills.)

A N i g h t o f D u e l l i n g U k e l e l e s

The Uke Off is back at the RVT with more nail-biting ukulele sparring! Hosted by uke-toting cabaret diva Tricity Vogue, the Uke Off returns for round three, to pit uke-player against uke-player once more in a battle of wits, musicianship, inventiveness and good old-fashioned star quality.

Reigning Uke Off Champion Fang returns as a judge, along with jazz diva Gill Manly, and the Godfather of the Ukulele, Rufus Yells. All three will be delighting us with ukulele performances of their own during the night too.

Uke Off rounds this time include the Twist Off (best twist on a cover version, or most twisted song), the Scare Off (scariest song), the W**k Off (sexiest song, or best rant at a w**ker), and the welcome return of the Geek Off (geekiest, nerdiest or boffinest song). Prizes will be appropriately weird and wonderful.

And the whole glorious night will be wrapped up with a no-holds-barred singalong for contestants and audience alike. Beg, borrow or steal a ukulele, and join the fray.

Contestants should apply to Tricity by email to ukeoff@tricityvogue.com stating which category/categories you want to enter. Your entry can be solo or ensemble, original or cover-version, ukulele only or a mixed instrumental line-up. The only rule is that there must be at least one ukulele in it. Apart from that, anything goes.

Naked Ukulele with Nigel Burch, Thursday 7 April

March 28th, 2011 · No Comments

Hello all

I’m really honoured to have Nigel Burch as my special guest at the next Naked Ukulele event – the Guardian described him as a cross between Ian Dury and Kurt Weill, which I completely agree with. Nigel is one of the elder statesmen of London ukulele music, and bashes the hell out of his banjolele with passion while singing with eviscerating honesty about life, love, death and despair. I cannot recommend him highly enough. Those of you who’ve already seen him at the Ukelele Cabaret or elsewhere will know what I’m talking about.

Full details of the night below.

Mischievous four-string strummer Tricity Vogue returns to Positively 4th Street’s adorable cabaret cellar on Thursday 7th April, with her special guest, the coruscating troubadour Nigel Burch. “Naked” means no microphones and no PA, of course. That’s not to say you won’t get to know two of the ukulele scene’s best loved performers a whole lot more intimately than you ever have before…

About Nigel Burch:
‘A cross between the music of Ian Dury, Brecht and Weill, an Irish pub band and a 1950′s skiffle group. Songs of urban-alienation with plenty of fierce spontaneous playing.’

Six days left to back my album on Kickstarter – can you help?

February 18th, 2011 · No Comments

Hello ukers

I’m using Kickstarter to try and raise the money for my first album. Kickstarter is an American website for funding creative projects in a race against the clock: if a project hits its target by the deadline, the project gets the money, but if fundraising falls short of the target, then none of the pledgers are billed, and the project gets no money at all.

I’ve already raised $2,628 of my $3,300 target, but with only six days to go, I still need to find another $672.

I’m hugely grateful to the fellow ukulele enthusiasts and performers who’ve already made a pledge, either in exchange for a signed copy of my album, or just to support me. If you like what I do, please make a small donation – and if you might buy my album in the future anyway, please consider doing it this way, as a pre-sale, so I can afford to make it in the first place. Even a one dollar donation makes a difference, and even though donations are in US dollars, the site is as easy to use as amazon.com (and in fact, payment is sorted out via Amazon Payments).

If I don’t hit my target you won’t be billed for your pledge – I only get any money if I succeed.

You can find out more about my album, and Kickstarter, here – where you can also make a pledge if you decide you’d like to help me out.

Here’s an image of the album artwork, including the track listings. Ukulele maestro Martin Wheatley is playing on the album too, as well as Scottish Jazz Award winner Stu Ritchie – names that many fellow ukers will know and love!

Cheers!

The Golden Ukulele, Thursday 18 November, Smithfield Tavern

February 18th, 2011 · No Comments

Hello all

I’m back at the Smithfield Tavern this Thursday for the 2nd Golden Ukulele – you can see what we got up to last time here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgjM7_Ku8rc

International composer and cabaret star Sxip Shirey is joining us hot off the plane from New York, and he’s written a bespoke number for us, which he’s dedicating to Keith Richards. The chorus goes…

“gimme a kiss
gimme a kiss,
I gotta ukulele in my fist…”

I lured Sxip onto a ukulele at the Edinburgh Festival and he’s a great addition to the ukulele cosmos as his music is original, powerful, groovy stuff. Do come and check him out if you can. He’ll be doing a set of his own material as well as taking part in Ukulele! The Musical. Here’s his website:

Sxip’s put a call out to anyone who can lend him a uke with a piezzo pick-up for the evening, to create his distinctive sounds. He’s planning on buying a uke of his own when he gets to the UK, but as he’s arriving that day, he’s not going to have time before the gig. If you can help him out for the evening, give me a shout on mail@tricityvogue.com and let me know.

Full details of Thursday’s gig below. Hope to see you there!
