Hello there friends-in-uke
This is a call-out to let you know about The Golden Ukulele and its special feature, Ukulele! The Musical, and (I hope) persuade you to come along and join in.
The Golden Ukulele at the Smithfield Tavern is a newish venture: we did two shows in October and November, then took a break over Christmas. But now we’re back for February 17 and March 17, and if it goes well it’ll become a monthly night in the longer term.
It’s got a different twist to the Ukelele Cabaret at the Lincoln Lounge, because as well as guest spots and singalongs, we feature an episode of Ukulele! The Musical every month. This is a story, featuring a song by a different singer-songwriter every month, which follows the trials and tribulations of our heroine Linda Squelch. We can write in cameos for performers who want to be a part of it, and rope in members of the audience on the spot. The idea with the song is that we teach it to all the uke players at the gig before we start the Episode, then when we get to the song bit in the Episode, everyone jumps on stage and joins in.
The Episodes are filmed and put up on youtube.
Here’s episode one, featuring a song by Jo Stephenson:
Here’s episode two, featuring a song by New York composer Sxip Shirey (the first song he’s ever written on ukulele):
After the Episode we also have a Late Night Jam to close the evening, where everyone with a ukulele crowds on stage and we all nestle around music stands and play together. We also get the audience singing along, either on stage or in the audience.
If you haven’t tried out The Golden Ukulele yet, please do come along and lend your support to this fledgeling evening, and help it grow into something strange and wonderful, both live and on the internet.
Below are the details for The Golden Ukulele. I’d hugely appreciate it if you could circulate this among your uke-loving friends, and help us get the word out.

Thursday 17 February
The Smithfield Tavern, 105 Charterhouse Street, London EC1M 6HR
Tricity Vogue and friends host a night of ukulele fun, featuring Episode Three of Ukulele! The Musical, starring Ria Lina as longsuffering heroine Linda Squelch, with a song and dance number written by comedian Paul Gannon. And we’ll round off the evening with a Late Night Jam. All ukulele players cordially invited to join in anything and everything. And so are non-players – but be prepared to be converted to the uke by the end of the night!
