Kala KA-TEM Exotic Mahogany Tenor Ukulele. Kala seem to have taken a look at their classic entry-level mahogany series and, rather wonderfully, decided to go one better. For just a slight increase in price the Kala Exotic Mahogany Series brings an extra tonal bite to the entry level price range.
Unmistakable features are the wood grain patterns that vary from flamed to figured and spotted to straight grain, framed by elegant black binding. The KA-TEM has warm tone with a pronounced mid-range edge to the attack and due to the larger sized body, plenty of projection. Qualities that any good mahogany Tenor Ukulele should possess!
I love the look and sound of this Ukulele it's deeper and richer than my Soprano and a more comfortable size to hold.
A satisfying instrument, whether for a beginner or someone with more experience but on a budget. Very playable, with low action at the nut. Resonant, decent volume, and intonation not far off the mark. A beautiful amber, flame-like mahogany surface. I was mildly disappointed with the binding-- some kind of paint' It seems to be of the same material as the headstock logo. But it's nicely applied, and in any case, no regrets whatsoever. I really enjoy playing it. 4 1/2 stars.
